Non-technical operations managers should not let implementation anxiety derail their plans. Open-source frameworks such as LangChain, which connects large language models to external data sources including ERP and MES systems, and Google's Vertex AI, which simplifies model training and deployment, have made capable agent-building accessible to teams without deep software engineering resources.
The critical mistake, however, is attempting enterprise-wide deployment immediately. The structured approach that consistently works looks like this:

Once your agent is live, resist the temptation to celebrate activity metrics. The measures that matter are tied directly to the original business problem:
- Response time improvements for customer or supplier queries
- Cost per transaction reductions in the targeted process
- Employee hours reclaimed from routine tasks and redirected to higher-value work
- Customer satisfaction scores where the agent handles direct interactions
- Error or exception rates compared to the pre-agent baseline
Vanity metrics, such as the number of queries processed or agent uptime percentage, tell you nothing about whether the deployment is actually moving the needle for your business.
The manufacturers gaining competitive advantage right now are not those with the most sophisticated agents. They are those with the clearest problem definitions, the most disciplined pilot processes, and the strongest human-oversight cultures. As deployment costs continue to fall and EU regulatory expectations firm up, the gap between those businesses and those still running undirected technology pilots will only widen.
