Tech giants are prioritising showcasing their AI capabilities to boost stock prices, often at the expense of user experience."

Emerging Solutions and User Adaptation

Despite the challenges, some industry leaders maintain cautious optimism about AI's potential to democratise content creation and even improve moderation at scale. Scott Morris, Chief Marketing Officer at Sprout Social, has argued: "There will be lots of junk and bumps in the road and problems, but maybe this can create amazing new forms of information-sharing and entertainment. AI allows us to moderate more effectively at scale, but we have to be cautious about taking humans out of the loop."

European users are becoming more sophisticated in their consumption habits, actively seeking out content that demonstrates genuine human insight and experience. Several concrete approaches are gaining traction:

The future of social media in Europe hinges on finding the right balance between AI enhancement and human authenticity. Platforms that successfully navigate this challenge will prioritise user control, transparency, and genuine connection over pure engagement metrics.

For European regulators, the window to shape platform behaviour through enforceable rules rather than voluntary commitments is narrowing. The EU AI Act's transparency requirements and the Digital Services Act's systemic risk framework together provide a legislative foundation that most other jurisdictions lack. The question is whether political will and regulatory capacity can match the pace of the technology. On current evidence, they are not keeping up.

Users who want to protect their own experience can take practical steps: curate feeds carefully by following verified human creators, use platform controls to limit AI content where available, engage critically with suspiciously polished posts, and diversify usage across platforms with different content philosophies. None of these steps is a substitute for structural regulatory action, but they are not nothing either.
